When Tomatoes Met Wagner, the humorous and uplifting new documentary by award-winning director Marianna Economou, has been chosen as the Greek entry for the Oscars.

The Greek Ministry of Culture proposed the film to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the Best International Feature Film Award, which will be announced at the 92nd ceremony of the Oscars on February 9 2020.

Other documentaries to be competing for the same Award are Honeyland from North Macedonia, Finding Farideh from Iran and Bridges of Time from Lithuania.

Marinna Economou’s film, about two ingenious Greek cousins and five village women, who tackle the world market with their home grown tomatoes, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival 2019 and has also been nominated for the European Broadcasting Award Prix – Europa. It has also screened at Sydney International Film Festival, Thessaloniki IFF, Visions du Reel, DOK.fest Munchen, CineDOC Tbilisi,  DocsBarcelona Spain,  DocAviv Festival Israel, Montreal Cinéma sous les Etoiles, Lemesos Int Doc. Festival and Sarajevo FF.
